And then the world stood still …
"I loved you for your whole life, and I'll miss you for the rest of mine" for Lucy the Beagle - my little puppet
Then the world stood still …
Life happens. We make plans, we are busy with every day things but sometimes life stops. It stopped yesterday at 11:42
Lucy beagle arrived with us over 15 years ago. She was the cutest and possibly most grumpiest puppy you could ever meet. I still remember her walking along our garden path as she arrived, Porthos in the back and her looking so grumpy like ‘well that where I am gonna rule’. And ruling she did.
Lucy was a one in a million. She was so loving, she was always true to herself, she was a fighter, she was the most amazing little beagle. There are not enough words to describe how amazing she was.
We had so many adventures.Lucy sat in a cafe in Paris, had Belgium chips in Ghent, Bratwurst in German. She played on so many beaches and walked through so many woodlands around the UK. She loved riding steam trains and having her ears outside the window, catching the wind. She loved rolling on Sandy beaches and sniffing in the park. She loved laying upside down in the garden, finding the sun anywhere in the house. She loved watching the world go by, while contemplating life.
And photos. We took so many. Even so yesterday I knew there will never be enough and you think about the moment you forget to take them, but those moments are in memories forever and I wish we could capture and see those memories
Lucy had this little hop with her back legs, I called it the happy hop. She was always under our feet in the kitchen when we were cooking. Oh and she loved cuddles and she loved when I blow her neck and she made the cutest howl. As she got older this howl was getting raspy, which was even cuter. When I was in my office, she demanded cuddles and laid in her bed next to me, loudly snoring. She had those tiny crooked teeth I loved. She loved picking raspberries in the garden and eating melon. You never ate alone, Lucy was always close by to make sure she got some bits. She always wagged her tail. She never lost her spark and she was a fighter. She had so many operations in the last years, but she just carried on, never complained. Well she did complain when other dogs sniffed her bum, this was a big no.
Over the last couple of month, Lucy slow down. She had a little backpack, so I could carry her, when she got tired on a walk. She always loved food, she once ate a whole loaf of sliced bread and a pack of alcohol filled chocolates, we call it ‘the day she found out she loved baileys’. But she got very picky with food, we had like 6 different food packs for her plus steak and salmon. We really spoilt her. But she lost so much weight and in the end her little body could not cope.
Losing Porthos was hard. But loosing Lucy feels even harder. We shared 15 years of cuddles and adventures. There are food bowls, her little jumpers and beds around the house. She was my little grumpy mate. And you know, they say dogs are like their humans … well we both are the grumpy ones.
She was the best little beagle girl we could have wished for.
You was the little sister of Porthos the Beagle and the big sister of Archie the Beagle.
There are so many things I want to say, so many moments I want to share, so many memories … but there are not enough words to share them all.
Lucy was born on the 13th May 2010 and she fell asleep in my arms on the 5th December 2025 at 11:42. It was the hardest moment and it broke our heart. Little Archie came to sniff her and say goodbye to his big sister. It is an end of an era and we are trying to find our feet without our little Lucy. I can still feel her snuggling on my neck, like on the last night we shared cuddling on the sofa.
Life sucks sometimes, definitely now. But we have little Archie who keeps us on our toes and will make sure we won't have a quiet minute. He is missing his big sister and it is all new for him as well, as they did everything together.
So here is to the Life of Lucy the Beagle. And what a great life she had. Tonight I will look to the moon, like we did on our last night together and dream giving you the biggest hug ever. You are now free up there, reunited with Porthos and Barney and all of our doggy friends. We love you to the moon and back forever and always.
